WHAT WE DO

MEMBERSHIP

The Young Marines is a youth education program for boys and girls, ages 8 through completion of high school. The Young Marines promotes the mental, moral and physical development of its members. The program focuses on character building, leadership, and promotes a healthy, drug-free lifestyle. The Young Marines Focal Point for the U.S. Marine Corps’ youth Drug Demand Reduction Efforts. Membership with the Buckley Field Young Marines gives our communities youth the opportunity to grow through community service for our local veteran groups and First Responders. Young Marines National Headquarters offers several other opportunities through programs such as Leadership Schools, Encampments and more through a program called SPACES.

TRAINING

Recruit Training is an approximately 14-week commitment on Tuesday nights and some Saturday mornings. During this time there is also a required 2.5 day extensive Field Training Exercise (FTX) towards the end of their training to become a Young Marine for the Young Marine Recruits to apply the skills they have learned up to that point, as well as learn some more hands on, skills such as Land Navigation, Survival and other basic field skills. Join Us or visit Recruit Training for more information.

NATIONAL PROGRAMS

Young Marines have the opportunity to attend the Young Marines National Summer Programs of SPACES: Schools, Adventures, Challenges, and Encampments. Schools consist of leadership courses. Adventures have a historical emphasis, designed for younger youth. In contrast, older youth can participate in Challenges, which consist of survival skills, wilderness training, and water-based activities. Encampments provide the opportunity for all Young Marines to train together as a large unit of up to 700 at a time.  Over 3,000 Young Marines participate in SPACES each year.

AWARDS

The Young Marines is the proud nine-time recipient of the Department of Defense’s Fulcrum Shield Award for Excellence in Youth Anti-Drug Programs. The award recognizes military-affiliated youth organizations around the world that have made concerted efforts at spreading the anti-drug messages throughout their communities. The first award was presented to the Young Marines National Headquarters and the second to the Bakersfield Young Marine unit in California.
